Baseball, softball camps taking applications

Posted: April 11, 2012 - 4:38pm

The 32nd annual Robert Sapp Baseball Camp and Girl’s Softball Camp is accepting applications for its summer session, to be held at Sweetwater Park in Thomson, June 25-29. Camps are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and are for boys ages 7-14 and girls ages 7-15. Six-year-olds may attend if they are skilled enough to play with the 7-year-old groups. The fee is $130, with team rates available. There will be a $10 discount for five or more players from one spring/summer league team or travel team.

Former Middle Georgia College and University of Georgia head baseball coach Robert Sapp will direct the camps. Sapp has directed numerous camps for the past 31 years throughout the state of Georgia. More than 100 of Sapp’s former players have signed professional contracts, and 21 have played in the major leagues. Sapp’s college coaching record was 915-210. High school coaches from the state and former and present college and pro players will also make up the staff.

The girl’s softball camp will also be held at the Sweetwater Park Softball Complex. Angela Crawford, head softball coach at Houston County High School in Warner Robins, will be the assistant director. Crawford is a highly successful coach, having won six straight Region 1-AAAAA championships and finishing as state runner-up in 2009. She specializes in pitching instruction. The girl’s camp will follow the same structure as the boy’s camp and will be completely separate from the boy’s camp.

The camp will feature fundamentals, game competition, videos, motivational and instructional lectures and demonstrations. The camp will benefit all campers, whatever their skill level, as each camper will have the opportunity to work on all phases of the game. Numerous past and present high school and college players from the middle Georgia area have worked on their skills as youngsters while attending camp in the past. Adam Wainwright of the St. Louis Cardinals and Jeff Francoeur of the Kansas City Royals attended the camp as youngsters.

Information and brochures on the camps can be obtained by calling the Thomson Recreation Department at (706) 595-2152; or Robert Sapp at (770) 287-3309 or email rsbbcamp@charter.net. Brochures can also be picked up at the Sweetwater Park concession stands in Thomson and the Thomson-McDuffie Recreation Department, Patriots Park in Columbia County, Washington Recreation Department, Briarwood Elementary School and the Wrens Dixie Youth concession stand.
