Three members of the 2011 Thomson Bulldogs varsity football team signed college letters of intent March 22 , pledging to join the Chattahoochee Technical College Golden Eagles.
Garrison Kendrick, Sebastian Hargrove and Omar Lewis were joined by family members and a host of Thomson coaches and administrators at the signing in a Thomson High School conference room.
All three Bulldogs said they hope to play one year at the Marietta college and then transfer to Mercer University, where their 2011 quarterback – Josh Jones – has signed to play beginning in the fall of 2013 during the revival of Mercer’s football program.
Cummings played center and tackle for coach Milan Turner. Hargrove played defensive tackle. Lewis played outside linebacker and defensive end.
Jones, who led the Bulldogs to an undefeated run until a clash with the eventual state champion Burke County Bears, has signed to play for the Mercer Bears as the Macon school resurrects its football program after a 70-year hiatus. The first intercollegiate football game played in the state was between Mercer and the University of Georgia in 1892. Mercer’s men’s lacrosse team – the first NCAA Division I program in Georgia – began competition last spring. Mercer’s women’s lacrosse team will also begin competition in 2013.
Tim Freeman is entering his second year as head coach of the Chattahoochee Tech football program. Before taking the job at CTC, Freeman was athletic director of the Cobb Saints Sports Academy in 2009. In 2008, he served as head coach for the New Covenant Academy Lions, a high school program for home-schooled student athletes.
