Briarwood's Tiffany Pate wins the battle for the ball under the basket against Piedmont.

The Briarwood Lady Bucs defeated the visiting Lady Cougars of Piedmont Academy, 42-24, on Friday.

“We didn’t play them very well the first time we faced them,” head coach Clayton Parrish said after the game. “So I challenged the girls to come out and play up to our level, and I was very, very pleased.”

Briarwood scored first in the game off a free throw by Tiffany Pate.

The Lady Bucs went on to score an additional 11 unanswered points before Piedmont made their first basket with 1:40 remaining in the first period. It would be Piedmont’s only goal for the period, and Briarwood led 14-2 at the end of the period.

The Lady Bucs continued to outpace the Lady Cougars in the second period, adding 22 points to their score while holding Piedmont to five points, and the score stood at 34-7 at halftime.

Piedmont fared little better in the third, adding only four points to their total while Briarwood added eight.

By the fourth period, Briarwood was giving playing time to their second- and third-string players, and Piedmont finally put together something of a scoring run. But it was too little, too late.

“It was really good for us to be able to sit our starters and give them a rest in the fourth quarter,” Parrish said. “One of my assistants reminded me that we have another region game tomorrow, so it was good to be able to rest them up for that.”

Rachel Coxwell was the leading scorer of the game with 18 points.

“I was seeing the basket really well tonight,” Coxwell said following the game.

“I was able to get open and make a number of layups, and I’m happy about that.”

Pate was the second highest scorer of the game, with 10 points, followed by Shannon Newsome with six points from two three-point shots.

Cameron Stadler had four points, and Ashlyn Dent and Copeland Price each had two points for the game.

The Lady Bucs next visited Central Fellowship on Saturday, winning 53-33 and bringing their record to 15-5.

The Lady Bucs were host to Brentwood on Tuesday, and will be host to Covenant Academy on Friday. Game time is 6 p.m.
