The Lady ‘Dogs of Thomson defeated the visiting Lady ‘Dogs of Harlem in basketball on Jan. 10 by a score of 54-12.
“Our girls played really well this game, especially defensively,” head coach Michael Williams said. “We did a good job pressing them tonight.”
Thomson scored first in the game and continued scoring thoughout the first half, holding Harlem scoreless in the first period while putting up 13 points. Thomson’s offense added an additional 24 points in the second period, while strong defensive play kept Harlem off the board until late in the second period. With 1:20 left in the first half, Harlem finally made a basket, which would be its only points in the half. At halftime Thomson held a commanding 37-2 lead.
Harlem fared marginally better in the second half, adding seven points in the third period. Thomson continued scoring, however, and the score stood at 48-9 at the end of the third period. Thomson added an additional six points in the fourth period while holding Harlem to only three points, with the final score totaling 54-12 at the end of regulation play.
“We still need to execute better offensively,” Williams said after the game. “The main thing is to keep getting better. That’s what I keep preaching to the girls, don’t relax, don’t get complacent, and keep playing as hard as you can. Regardless of the score, you still got to compete, and you don’t want to just let the other team have open shots.”
Scoring was evenly divided for Thomson, with Alesheia Johnson leading the team with 13 points. Nekia McNair and Brittany Reid had 11 and 10 points, respectively. Ke’Onda Bradshaw totaled 8 points, and Jaylan Howard, De’Shia Dunn, Jadah Lawson, Ta’Shaundra Boyd, Shenequa Hudson and Wanda Lockett each had 2 points for the game.
With the victory, the Lady Dogs moved to 8-5 overall and 2-0 for the region.
“Our main goal continues to be to reach the state playoffs,” Williams said. “Individual games along the way help us get there and get better positioned for the playoffs. But we have to keep playing hard.”
The Lady ‘Dogs traveled to face Westside on Friday, and were defeated 55-40. They then traveled to Josey on Tuesday.
Their next home game is Friday vs. Grovetown. Game time is 7 p.m.
