Briarwood to stage 'Beauty and Beast'   03/22/12 - 10:13am

Briarwood Academy will have its production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. at Briarwood’s Clinton H. Grant Field house.

There are 54 students in grades 3 through 12 participating in the musical. Parts were auditioned for right after Christmas break. Kari Callaway, the music teacher at Briarwood Academy, is the directo. Callaway said the production lends itself really well to including elementary students.

Farm Bureau awards scholarships to seniors   03/07/12 - 11:55pm

The McDuffie County Farm Bureau recently awarded scholarships to seniors Taylor Whitaker and Shannon Newsome. Taylor attends Thomson High School and Shannon goes to Briarwood Academy.

The scholarships are awarded to outstanding high school seniors who are pursuing a course of study in agriculture or a related field. Taylor will attend Georgia College and State University in the fall and she will major in Early Childhood Education. Shannon will attend the University of Georgia and major in Biology.

Middle school gets new greenhouse   03/07/12 - 11:51pm

Thomson-McDuffie Middle School recently opened its new greenhouse.

The school hasn’t had a greenhouse for its agricultural program since it moved to its current building on White Oak Road in 2010, though it did have one at its previous location.

The new facility was funded with a $75,000 Perkins Fund Capital Improvement Grant.

“It really helps as far as letting the students grow plants any time of the year, no matter what the weather is,” said agriculture teacher Jay Murray.

Rights struggles recalled in middle school program   03/07/12 - 11:36pm

Sky Powell stood in the center of Thomson-McDuffie Middle School’s candlelit rotunda Feb. 28, dressed as a bespectacled, middle-age department store worker.

For just a moment, she was not a tiny sixth grade student at the middle school, but a black woman on a city bus in 1955 Montgomery, Ala., refusing to give up her seat.

With a brown paper shopping bag hanging from her arm and fellow students and their parents encircling her, Powell read the biography she had written about civil rights activist Rosa Parks during the school’s first Poetry Cafe.
