There was widespread disagreement as to who arrived second on that Saturday in December. Some people, though, said Mike Carrington was the second person to arrive at The Thomson Depot to set up the Festival off Main.

State has a lot riding on primaries   01/12/12 - 1:48am

ATLANTA — At different points in the young primary season, Georgia had two favorite sons leading the Republican presidential race.

Had either Herman Cain or Newt Gingrich held that perch, become the nominee and eventually captured the White House, state leaders would have been licking their chops over the possible gravy train.

Schools to face many challenges this year   01/04/12 - 6:27pm

The McDuffie County school system looks forward to 2012 with much anticipation. The system will face its five-year review by the SACS CASI National accreditation system. This District Accreditation process is a means by which SACS sends a review team to visit our schools and determines what positive efforts have been made to improve our schools and possibly provide insight into recommendations for future initiatives.

Performance arts center needed   01/04/12 - 6:26pm

To the editor:

It has always been a dream of mine to bring a performance arts center to Thomson. A performance arts center would give young and old a chance to fulfill their dreams to become a singer, a model, an actor or an actress.

That’s the reason for my You Got Talent singing competition, which will be staged this year. This is just the start of the many events I plan to host throughout the year.

No butts about it, smoking hurts everyone   01/04/12 - 6:24pm

The new year has begun and, like in other years, many of us plan to make healthier choices. With an adult smoking rate of almost 20 percent in Georgia, there’s no better time than now to make a plan to quit smoking. The American College of Physicians, the second-largest physician organization in the country, has long promoted smoking-cessation programs to improve health.

Personally, 2011 brought some tears, and lots of joy   01/04/12 - 7:36pm

The fading moment that we call 2011 has left a set of impressions in every mind. You will remember the year for your own reasons, and I will remember the slice of time for mine.

Those reasons might intertwine more than you would imagine. Let’s share. May I go first?

I’ll start my list with a Valentine’s Day wedding, across the bridge in South Carolina. That event shaped my year and many years to come. Of course, no husband should begin a list with any other event. That’s a reality that even I can grasp.

And your list?

OK, I’ll tell one more.

Manna Inc. would like to express our gratitude to all the churches, companies, individuals and clubs that donated food and money and volunteered for us this year. May God bless you all this holy season and give you a wonderful New Year.

Sincerely,

Lynda Gheesling and Manna staff

Thanks to Grinch, New Year's came twice   01/04/12 - 7:42pm

And the minute his heart didn’t feel quite so tight, he whizzed on his sleigh through the bright morning light. Carving the Who’s delicious roast beast was the best, but without something to hate, the Grinch felt distressed.
