He was born to Ernest and Dorothea Prow in Memphis, TN. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II as a Lieutenant piloting four engine bombers. Following the war he attended Memphis State and graduated from Purdue University with a BsChE degree and did graduate studies in industrial engineering. In 1949 he married Barbara Bartlett of Thomson, with whom he had two children. He spent his career in the pulp and paper industry working in various engineering and management positions. In 1996, he retired from the pulp and paper industry but found sitting at home was not for him and went back to work for a few more years at Dozier Realty. Over the years he served as vice president of the local chapter of the American Institute of Industrial Engineers; Printing Committee National Chairman for the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry; and President of Toastmasters International, Savannah. In 1999, he married Iona T. Price of Thomson. After finally retiring he and his wife spent many years enjoying Franklin, N.C. in the summer and Thomson in the winter. He always enjoyed a cool mountain stream. Ernie had a great love of learning and a wonderful sense of humor. The two often united when he would tell you something outrageous for a fact so authoritatively you would believe him. About half the time it might actually be true. He was a devoted son, husband, father and grandfather who will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his wife, Iona Prow, Thomson; daughter, Leta and Gary Bird, Baxley, Ga.; son, Ernest and Alicia Prow, Arnoldville, Ga.; step-daughters, Irma Lynn and Wayne Whitaker, and Angela and Andy Blair, all of Thomson; step-son, Olin and Cheryl Price, Thomson; twenty grandchildren and step-grandchildren, seven nieces and nephews.
