FATHER DAUGHTER DANCE

DETAILS: Treat your daughter to quality time with the first man she will love – her dad. The evening will include dinner, dance instruction, games, crafts and portraits. SCHOOL DAY OUT

WHEN: Monday

DETAILS: Open to ages 5-12. Activities from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with early drop-off at 7 a.m. and late pickup until 6 p.m. at no additional cost. Cost is $25 per day for members; $50 per day for nonmembers. Free spots at Family Y of Thomson for those who qualify. Discount for additional siblings. KARATE CLASSES

GYMNASTICS

WHERE: Thomson Family Y130 Center

DETAILS: Gymnastics consists of basic advanced floor tumbling and gymnastics using high and low beams, uneven bars and more. Classes are progressive and are based on a combination of ability and age levels. All participants perform a winter and spring show. Fee: $43 per month for members; $63 per month for nonmembers. ART LESSONS

WHERE: Thomson Family Y130 Center

WHEN: Mondays and Wednesdays

DETAILS: Classes focus on different mediums: painting, drawing, ceramics and more. Participants present their works in an art gallery at winter and spring shows. JUNIOR RANGERS

WHERE: Mistletoe State Park

WHEN: 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday

DETAILS: Cost: $25 per child. Children will discover the outdoor world through a diversity of adventures such as Georgia wildlife, outdoor cooking and hiking. They will learn how to build a fire for cooking, learn some unique ways to cook over a campfire; then roast hot dogs over the open fire. SOUP, CHILI & STEW COOKOFF

WHERE: Dearing Elementary School cafeteria

WHEN: Saturday, Feb. 25. Contestants must deliver a slow-cooker full of their entry by 4:30 p.m. Judging begins at 5:30 p.m. Then at 6 p.m., for $5 per person, the public may enjoy samples of all entries.

DETAILS: Watch for details of the annual Dearing Mayfest on Saturday, May 5. Proceeds from both events go to Good Samaritan House, Dearing’s free health clinic.

SENIOR OF YEAR

WHERE: Thomson Senior Center

WHEN: Application deadline is Feb. 24.

DETAILS: The public is asked to help choose the senior citizen of the year for 2012. A candidate must be a resident of McDuffie County, 70-plus years of age, who has performed (or is performing) worthwhile deeds and who has made (or is making) a positive difference in McDuffie County. EGGS AND ISSUES

WHAT: Registration for the 2012-2013 school year in McDuffie County

MORE INFO: There has been a date change for pre-K and kindergarten registration for the 2012-2013 school year. Registration for both pre-K and kindergarten will be held April 9-13. A new date for the pre-K lottery will be announced.

 

HIGH SCHOOL WRITING TEST

WHERE: Thomson High School

WHEN: Wednesday, Feb. 29

DETAILS: The Georgia High School Writing Test continues to be a requirement for all students seeking to earn a high school diploma from the state of Georgia. Students who have finished coursework but who still need to take and pass the test should call the school at (706) 986-4200 before Tuesday, Feb. 21, to register for this test.

 

HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION TEST

DETAILS: The school will administer the Georgia High School Graduation Tests in English, math, science and social studies. FRIDAY: EMPLOYER EXPO will feature 50 organizations recruiting for part-time, full-time, internship, co-op, volunteer and seasonal hiring needs. Graduate and professional schools will also attend.
