Senior guidance counselor Sheron Finnerty recently announced this year’s Thomson High School STAR student is Ethan Dowler.

Dowler, the son of Tom and Connie Dowler, was chosen as STAR student based on his outstanding academic record and his SAT score. He is currently ranked in the top 5 percent of his class and posted a SAT score of 2,040 out of a possible 2,400. Dowler plans to attend the University of Georgia and major in economics.

Dowler chose band director Jessie Morlan as his STAR teacher. Morlan has taught in McDuffie County for 16 years. He has also represented THS as its Teacher of the Year.

“Ethan is one of the most gifted and well-rounded students to ever come through the THS band program,” Morlan said. “He is abundantly blessed with intellect and talent. It has been an honor to be given the opportunity to work with him.”

Dowler said he selected Morlan as his STAR teacher because he has had the greatest influence on him, not only as a musician but as a person.

“I have gained self-confidence and leadership skills due to Mr. Morlan’s instruction and dedication to his students and his profession,” Dowler said.
