Monday is the first of many deadlines and key dates for the 2012 election cycle, and McDuffie County Elections Director Kelvin Williams wants everyone to be prepared.
Georgia’s presidential preference elections are scheduled for Tuesday, March 6, but the registration deadline is Monday. That’s also the last date for voters to record a change of address or to make other changes in their registration information.
Williams and his staff will spell out all the details at a drop-in from 4-6 p.m. Monday at the agency’s new office in the old courthouse, 337 Main St. in Thomson. The agency completed its move from the White Oak Road office in January.
Williams said three election dates are on the 2012 calendar. On July 31, voters will participate in the general primary for Congress, state representative, state senator and statewide offices. Voters also will participate in the general primary for county commission District 2 seats A and B, county commission chairman, sheriff, clerk of courts, coroner and tax commissioner.
Winners will advance to the Nov. 6 general election, which also will include the presidential election.
Williams said other nonpartisan elections have been moved from November back to July. Those are the probate judge and school board elections. School board posts to be decided this year are Super District 2 and single-member Districts 4, 5 and 6.
Williams asks that any questions be directed to him at (706) 595-2105.
During the open house at the McDuffie County Board of Elections and Voter Registration, participants can tour the facility, review the new voting maps, obtain a free voter I.D. card, ask questions about the voting process, explore the components of the electronic voting system, operate the demonstration voting units, and more.
