A 32-year-old Grovetown man died after a crash on Interstate 20 in McDuffie County Wednesday evening, Jan. 11.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, David Austin Balfour was traveling west near mile marker 166 in a 2001 Ford Explorer around 11:20 p.m. when the vehicle left the roadway.

Officers said the driver overcorrected and flipped after the vehicle became airborne.

The vehicle continued to flip until it came to a rest at the bottom of an embankment.

Witnesses at the scene told officers the vehicle had been traveling at a high speed before the incident.

Balfour, who was partially ejected, was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after midnight, according to McDuffie County Deputy Coroner Sammy Purvis.

Balfour was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Authorities are investigating whether Balfour was under the influence of alcohol.
