ART LESSONS

JUNIOR RANGERS

WHERE: Mistletoe State Park

DETAILS: Cost: $25 per child. Children will discover the outdoor world through a diversity of adventures such as Georgia wildlife, outdoor cooking and hiking. They will learn how to build a fire for cooking, learn some unique ways to cook over a campfire; then roast hot dogs over the open fire. SOUP, CHILI & STEW COOKOFF

WHERE: Dearing Elementary School cafeteria

WHEN: Saturday, Feb. 25. Contestants must deliver a slow-cooker full of their entry by 4:30 p.m. Judging begins at 5:30 p.m. Then at 6 p.m., for $5 per person, the public may enjoy samples of all entries.

DETAILS: Watch for details of the annual Dearing Mayfest on Saturday, May 5. Proceeds from both events go to Good Samaritan House, Dearing’s free health clinic.

SENIOR OF YEAR

WHERE: Thomson Senior Center

WHEN: Application deadline is Feb. 24.

DETAILS: The public is asked to help choose the senior citizen of the year for 2012. A candidate must be a resident of McDuffie County, 70-plus years of age, who has performed (or is performing) worthwhile deeds and who has made (or is making) a positive difference in McDuffie County. ALZHEIMER’S
AWARENESS DAY

WHERE: Georgia State Capitol

WHEN: Monday

DETAILS: Buses will leave from Evans (Columbia County), make a stop in Thomson and arrive in Atlanta for a day of meetings with legislators and lunch. Join with caregivers and concerned Georgians as they stand united on the steps of the Capitol to support programs and services for those battling Alzheimer’s and related dementias.
