Weight-loss competition offers winners cash prizes

Posted: January 4, 2012 - 6:46pm

All Family Y of Greater Augusta branches, including the Thomson branch at 510 Hill St., are participating in Team Lean.

The 12-week weight-loss competition is for individuals and teams of four or five. There are competition categories for larger teams from churches, schools and businesses, too.

The kickoff is 3-8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 9, at all Family Y locations.

To register, visit any Family Y location on or before Jan. 9. Participation includes a T-shirt, weekly weigh-ins, weekly nutrition and fitness seminars, and a 12-visit Family Y Guest Pass. For more information about competing as a school or church group, contact Janet Thornburg at (803) 349-8101. For more information about competing as a business group, contact Teri Maas at (706) 922-9620.

Per-person fee for individuals and teams of four or five are $50 for Family Y members and $70 for nonmembers. There is an entry fee of $300 for school and church groups. The entry fee for corporate teams depends on the size of the team. All categories except for corporate groups compete for cash prizes. Corporate teams compete for a large trophy. Winners are determined by their overall percentage of body weight loss.

There’s something for kids, too. Children ages 5-17 can participate in Let’s Play 60, a free 12-week nutrition and fitness challenge that runs the same weeks as Team Lean. Let’s Play 60 provides the guidance and rewards to encourage the entire family to adopt healthier habits at home. Sign up for Let’s Play 60 at any Family Y location on or before the Jan. 9 Team Lean Kick-Off.

Also, all Family Y locations are waiving the joiner’s fee now through Jan. 31. That’s up to a $100 savings for the family.

For more information on the program at the Thomson Y, call (706) 595-5615.

The Thomson branch is located across Hill Street from McDuffie Regional Medical Center. The Y offers a fitness center with treadmills, elliptical machines, recumbent bikes, and strength training equipment, a free-weight center, group exercise studio, group cycling studio, a nursery, and youth activities.
