As it turns out, boll weevils proved helpful in South   04/19/12 - 12:09am

Elvis sang it; Dwight sang it: She’s mean and she’s evil like a little ol’ boll weevil … If that’s true, she’ll knock you down and dare you to get up while stabbing her stiletto in your chest. And when it’s all said and done, you’ll walk away a better man, saying she’s the best thing that ever happened to you.

It’s almost inconceivable that anyone could feel that way about her or about a fuzzy, brown, cotton-boll-browsing beetle. The only explanation is that they’re both God’s creatures. They both have purpose.

The children are on restriction, whatever that means   03/28/12 - 5:42pm

“You’re on restriction!” When our oldest son was 3 and intentionally dumped over his cereal bowl to grab our attention from his 1-year-old brother, my husband angrily announced to the bugger, “You’re on restriction!” What a hollow threat. The kid had gone off his feed 12 months prior and had been living on air and milk ever since. He didn’t give two flips if we confiscated the animal crackers.

The little guy was rather proud of the pronouncement, too. He went to preschool and told his teachers, “I’m on astriction.” They loosened his belt.

Norris book fair features variety of reading material   04/05/12 - 1:57pm

Norris Elementary School recently held its annual Spring Scholastic Book Fair in the media center. The theme for this year was Book Fair Luau. There were a variety of books to appeal to students from beginning novels, science-based books, photo-rich books, and even cookbooks.

Scholastic Book Fairs require schools to have a sales goal, and Norris Elementary School surpassed its goal, earning funds to purchase new books for the school’s media center. As the collection is weeded, the media center will replace books and purchase newer titles.

The Thomson High School Bulldogs settled for a 9-3 loss to the Evans Knights at Lake Olmsted Stadium, home of the Augusta GreenJackets.

From the shade of the overhang beneath the press box, Doupé watched his son, Hank, play second base for the Bulldogs. Hank had been excited about the event. “I think they all are,” Doupé said.
